Spartanburg City Fire Department Holds Unique Training Course

SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – The City of Spartanburg Fire Department spent the day Friday taking its 3rd annual training for new firefighters, teaching them how to jump out windows in an emergency.

“This morning we were handed our rescue kits and shown how to pack and use them,” said firefighter Zachary Cummings.

The day is devoted to training new firefighters on how to exit a burning building, in case they cannot get out through a normal exit.

The ministry says it is an escape of last resort, but it is essential that they know how to do it correctly.

The station says they started taking this training three years ago, after receiving a grant to get the equipment and two-story construction simulations.

“Having this training, this equipment and this equipment gives us that option that if we can’t do any more and we’re trapped, to come out and save ourselves,” Cummings said.

The department says they are one of the only fire stations in the state to take this training.

“It’s definitely a recruiting tool. People who are enthusiastic about the job are more likely to want to work for a department that does it, ”said Lt. Brad Stio.

In the past, they’ve even asked firefighters to come and work for them via training social media posts.

“The fact that we take a lot of pictures and post them on social media, it really makes some people say hello, I want to work for this fire department,” Stio said.

Veteran station firefighters also participate in the training, just to get up to speed on proper procedures.
