Cutchins BBQ reopens McKinney location after fire with famous pitmaster


Acclaimed barbecue restaurant reopens after a fire, and with a famous new name in the kitchen: BBQ cackling will reopen its location at 1301 Tennessee St. in McKinney after being closed since late 2020.

Hutchins was forced to shut down temporarily after an electrical fire on New Years Eve damaged the kitchen and roof, according to a statement. They will reopen on August 31.

The repair cost over $ 1 million to rebuild the structure and replace all damaged equipment. Brothers and owners Tim Hutchins and Trey Hutchins thank their loyal fans for supporting them by visiting their other location in Frisco.

“The number one question we have been asked this year is, ‘When will the McKinney store reopen? ”, Says Tim Hutchins. “We thank our customers every day who stayed with us during the wait, some coming to our site in Frisco to continue to support our passion.”

Hutchins BBQ is a family-run establishment founded by barbecue maker Roy Hutchins in 1978, offering Texan barbecue and attentive, friendly service. Currently operated by Tim and Trey Hutchins, it has offices in Frisco and McKinney. The accolades include the list of the 50 best barbecue joints by Texas monthly.

A rebuild isn’t the only development: it will be a whole new ball game for people.

“When McKinney reopens, they will be pleasantly surprised to find the exact same restaurant they used to love, but with an even better team,” said Tim. “During the shutdown, our McKinney staff worked hand in hand with our Frisco staff, and their unification significantly improved the games for both teams.”

During the shutdown, they also hired a new pitmaster: John Mueller, grandson of famous pitmaster Louie Mueller, and himself an award-winning barbecue craftsman. According to the statement, he contacted the Hutchins family to offer to join forces.

“Growing up in a barbecue family, I knew Hutchins and respected their reputation in the industry,” Mueller said in a statement. “I have owned a barbecue business for 30 years. I am ready to stop owning them but to keep doing what I love.”

Mueller’s extensive barbecue career includes cooking at Louie Mueller BBQ, John Mueller BBQ, JMueller BBQ, John Mueller Meat Co., Black Box Barbecue, and Granger City Brewing. According to the statement, he is eager to show the industry that his reputation as the so-called black prince of barbecue may not be fair.

Trey Hutchins notes in a statement that Mueller is modest.

“John is considered one of the best pitmasters in the country, even though he claims to be just a cook,” says Trey. “So when John offered to work together, it wasn’t obvious to us. McKinney and Frisco locations will feature items made by Mueller, starting with its sausage specialties, including a Peach Habanero sausage, blueberry maple sausage and Hot Gut, with more to come.
